Organisational Change Management and Alignment: A Health Care Case Study

Change in organisations begins with change in human behaviour.  Human Performance Technology (HPT) models and principles offer the business strategist a valuable guide to selecting and implementing the most effective change solutions. This article describes how HPT principles were successfully applied in an enterprise-wide change effort of a major South African health care provider.

Managing Complex Change

Motivate staff to embrace change.  Smooth the organisational transition to new ways of working through corporate merger, restructure or introduction of new technology.

The top row of the complex change model illustrates the 5 critical aspects of successful change management.  The right column describes the outcome if one of these critical components is missing.

For example:

  • Without a clear vision, staff become confused
  • Without proper skills, staff become anxious in trying to fulfill the required tasks
  • Without proper resources, skilled staff become frustrated
  • Without an action plan, staff waste energy on false starts and lose motivation
  • Without incentives, change happens gradually
